Dr. Destura is a multi-awarded clinician and scientist who continuously try to narrow down the gap between Basic Science, Medical Science, and Biotechnology and community service by combining all disciplines to reach a focused goal. His “research bench to community” approach is ultimately geared towards developing low-cost technologies for the control of infectious diseases in the Philippines and the generation of new knowledge to find sustainable and equitable solutions to diseases of poverty.

Genomics & Bioinformatics Training 2017
The Philippines Genome Center was tasked by the Department of the Science and Technology to conduct training on genomics and bioinformatics for participants coming from ASEAN countries to strengthen academic ties with researchers, scientists from Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar (CLM).

Dr. Cheryl P. Andam is an Assistant Professor on Microbial Ecology at the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Biomedical Sciences, University of New Hampshire, USA was in the country from July 10 to August 8, 2017 as a Balik Scientist Program awardee hosted by the Philippine Genome Center.
Genomic Studies for Otitis Media
Previously within an indigenous Filipino community with a ~50% prevalence of otitis media, we identified an A2ML1 mutation that confers a high risk of otitis media susceptibility and influences the relative abundance of specific bacterial taxa within the middle ear.
