Universitas Indonesia, Depok Campus, Jakarta, Indonesia | September 18-22, 2026. The Philippine Genome Center participated in the Train the Trainer for Genomics and AI Communities – Asia Workshop on September 18-22, 2026, hosted by Wellcome Sanger Institute Scientific Training and Events and sponsored by Google DeepMind, conducted at Universitas Indonesia, Depok Campus, Jakarta, Indonesia.
The five-day workshop gathered bioinformatics and genomics professionals in Asia to immerse them in lectures and hands-on sessions delivered by experts. The program extensively covers:
- Practical approaches for teaching bioinformatics and genomics in diverse learning environments.
- Practical approaches for designing, organizing, and delivering local training programmes.
- Best practices for mentoring future trainers, facilitators, and community champions.
- Techniques for developing collaborative projects and regional training initiatives.
- Methods for building and sustaining communities of practice that support peer learning and collaboration.
- An introduction to AlphaGenome and AlphaGenome Atlas, delivered by an expert from Google DeepMind
- Methods for critically evaluating AI tools, understanding their capabilities and limitations, and assessing AI-generated outputs.
- Strategies for integrating AI tools into the teaching and delivery of bioinformatics and genomics courses.
Among the trainers is PGC Bioinformatician Carlo Lapid (fourth from left), who gave a lecture on “How to Teach: Genome Assembly”. Last May 18-22, 2026, PGC also hosted the PH remote-linked classroom for the Genome Sequence Analysis – Asia. It is the regional pilot of the course hosted by Wellcome Connecting Science and conducted in collaboration with other scientific institutions in Asia.
The Train the Trainer for Genomics and AI Communities – Asia, together with its partner institutions, such as the PGC, aims to build a sustainable, Asia-led network of trainers, facilitators, and community champions to further strengthen genomics and bioinformatics capacity.
