A Shotgun Metagenomics Sequencing training was conducted by the DNA Sequencing Core Facility (DSCF) on March 4-8, 2024 for University of the Philippines Cebu researchers.

The trainees from UP Cebu were composed of researchers from Project REHAB (River Ecosystem Health Assessment using Biomonitoring Tools) under the DETOXS Program (Detection, Treatment, and Detoxification System for Emerging Contaminants of Concern in Wastewater). The five-day training is comprised of introductory lectures on Metagenomics sequencing and closely followed by hands-on laboratory experience from library preparation to sample loading.

Instead of reading one specific region of DNA, the method of Shotgun metagenomic sequencing allows for a comprehensive sampling of all genes or all genomic DNA in a sample.
