Research Areas: Marine genomics, molecular genetics, and bioinformatics; phylogenetics and genetic diversity; algal and microbial biotechnology

Dr. Lluisma is a Research Professor in marine biotechnology at the UP-Marine Science Institute. Research in his laboratory is centered on genomics/molecular genetics and their applications in marine biology and biotechnology, and leverages experimental and computational approaches and tools to address fundamental as well as applied problems, particularly those relevant to the Philippine society. The research areas include genetic diversity, molecular evolution, biosynthetic pathways, and discovery and development of marine products such as drug leads and CAzymes. As Program Director for the Core Facility for Bioinformatics at the Philippine Genome Center, he also leads efforts to develop and deploy bioinformatics-oriented computational resources and services and make these accessible to the local genomics community, and to develop the facility’s research programs in selected areas of bioinformatics.
