Research Areas: plant molecular genetics/genomics studies for crop improvement and germplasm management application; basic S&T research studies towards the development of molecular biotechnology technologies; and crop pre-breeding employing advancements in genomics and computational biology.


  • Completed PhD in Molecular Genetics and Plant Breeding in 2004 from the University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; M.S. Genetics minor in Plant Breeding in 1998 from UP Los Baños; and BS-Agriculture major in Plant Breeding, Magna Cum Laude, in 1990 from the Visayas State College of Agriculture (now Visayas State University), Baybay City, Leyte.
  • Other relevant work experience as follows: Fulbright Advance Research Fellow on Bioinformatics at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, Cornell University, USA (2011-2012); Molecular Marker Specialist at AVRDC – The World Vegetable Center, Taiwan (2009-2010); and Junior Plant Breeder at East West Seed Co. Inc. (1991-1995).
  • Main proponent and instructor of the ABT 106 (Molecular Markers) core course of the new BSABT undergraduate program of the College of Agriculture, UPLB. Advised undergraduate (BSABT and BSA) and graduate (MBB, Genetics and Plant Breeding) students in both academic and student thesis research.
  • Have completed and on-going research projects on crop molecular genetics, breeding, genomics and agricultural biotechnology e.g. PCAARRD-funded Genomics Assisted Breeding in Coconut (Program Leader), UPLBFI-Del Monte collaborative Genomics Program in Pineapple (Program Leader), and PCAARRD-DOST project on Tomato Genomics for Virus Resistance (Project Leader). Publications of research outputs in refereed journals, and presentations in local and international scientific fora/conferences.
