Dr. Michael Zaragoza’s talk at PGC on Cardiac Disease Modeling
Dr. Michael Vincent Zaragoza is a Filipino American physician-scientist and a 20-year faculty member at the University of California Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine. His research and clinical work center on cardiogenomics, particularly the genetic basis of cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia.

The Institute of Biology and the Philippine Genome Center is co-hosting a seminar titled “Cardiac Disease Modeling Using Patient-derived Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells and single-cell RNA-sequencing” featuring Dr. Michael Zumaraga, Associate Professor from the UCI Cardiogenomics Research Program. Decoding 1,001 Philippine traditional rice varieties (TRVs)
The joint initiative stands to deliver a huge amount of data from the genome sequences of the 1001 Philippine TRVs. This will be made available to the public via the PH Rice GDB. From strengthening local expertise in crop genomics and bioinformatics, to providing more research opportunities—the program anticipates its potential in increasing and strengthening research output and capacity. The 1001 Rice Genome (1k1RG) Program is a promise to the future of rice in the Philippines as it ultimately aims to benefit farmers through accelerating the improvement and production of rice varieties.

The Protein, Proteomics, and Metabolomics Facility (PGC-PPMF) continues to fulfill its vision of expanding capacity-building for Omics technologies in the Philippines. On October 1 and 2, 2024, the PPMF held a research design workshop and an MOU signing ceremony for the implementation of its extension program “Capacity Building for Clinicians and Early-Career Scientists on Proteomics-based Research”.
