DengueKit

Health Program

In line with the vision and mission of the Philippine Genome Center, the Health Program will utilize genomics research to develop diagnostic kits for early diagnosis and treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases; expand strategic biogenomic surveillance and forecasting system in the Philippines; identify drug resistant strains and new strains during epidemics and outbreaks; and advance pharmacogenomics.

The applications of genomics in medicine involve diagnosis, prognosis, prevention and/or treatment of diseases. Genomics is expected to transform health care delivery through personalized medicine. This wide array of potential applications of genomics in health involve:

  • the identification of genetic variations among individuals that can act as biomarkers for increased susceptibility to infectious diseases such as dengue, tuberculosis and malaria as well as non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer;
  • discovery of novel therapeutic targets through a better understanding of molecular mechanisms and disease pathways; and
  • development of personalized medicine for optimum, individualized treatment for every Filipino.
