Last April 21-24, 2013, Dr. Cynthia Saloma and research assistant Krizelle Alcantara traveled to Phuket, Thailand to attend the 2013 Illumina Asia Pacific Scientific Summit. It is a premier regional customer event hosted by Illumina which brought together scientists from renowned research institutions in the Asia Pacific, including Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, and Australia, as well as from the US and Germany.
With the theme “Advances in Genome Science”, the meeting featured plenary sessions, parallel lectures, and scientific poster presentations highlighting the latest genomic research in cancer, agrigenomics, bioinformatics, genetic disease, and microbial genomics. New and exciting technological developments from Illumina were also presented, giving participants the opportunity to give their direct feedback to the Illumina executives and management on how they can improve their products and services. The presentations primarily revolved around Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) applications using the Illumina HiSeq and MiSeq platforms, the latter of which the Philippine Genome Center will be adapting.
