About the speaker
Dr. Cheong Io Hong is a distinguished expert in the field of biobanking, celebrated for his significant contributions to medical research and public health. He earned his PhD in Infectious Disease from Imperial College London and he holds a position at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Public Health, focusing on advancing biobanking practices.
International Involvement
Dr. Hong has an extensive international background that enriches his work in biobanking. He serves as visiting scholars at WHO-IARC, an ambassador for the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) in China, promoting best practices and collaboration in biobanking on a global scale. His research primarily addresses the challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries, aiming to develop sustainable biomedical research frameworks that can enhance health outcomes in these regions. Additionally, he has played an advisory role at international forums, including participation in G20 meetings, where he provides expertise on integrating biobanking methods into global health strategies, emphasizing how biobanks can support digital public health initiatives and enhance research capabilities during health crises.
Research Contributions
Throughout his career, he has authored and co-authored numerous articles on biobanking, biosafety, and the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare. He leads the largest Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) cohort in South China, focusing on understanding the implications of EBV in various diseases. His research tackles crucial issues such as ethical governance, data integrity, and the role of biobanks in facilitating advancements in personalized medicine.
